listen, i get the whole "canon is a sandbox, do whatever you want" thing, but i do truly have to wonder what some hatchetfield fans are on with their interpretations of charlotte and sam. like. where are people getting the impression that sam "a literal cop who kidnapped a black child so his girlfriend (that's 13 years younger than him, mind you) could blackmail her way into winning a pageant" sweetly is like this,,, misunderstood and tragic figure, and that charlotte "i wanna make things work with sam because i love him. i know i shouldn't, but i do" sweetly is some uncaring and neglectful wife. like, charlotte's clearly a woman who is deeply stressed by her failing marriage (something that is made extremely evident in the first goddamn scene of tgwdlm), and still loves her husband but sleeps around bc of his unwillingness to help her make things work between them. sam is a fucking cop who clearly gives zero shits about his marriage, which is, again, evident from the first non-musical scene ever presented to us in the hatchetfield series. i know that you're not supposed to say this out loud bc it makes fandom people uncomfortable, but some of you are just flat-out wrong.

Tbh I feel like one of the biggest weaknesses of Critical Role, both for the larger campaigns and ExU, is that it tends to be a little TOO open sandbox-y. It’s fun when characters can do literally anything, but it can make the story feel messy and cluttered or directionless. There was a lot that I really enjoyed with ExU, but I came out feeling kind of unsatisfied because there was so much stuff left completely unresolved or that never went anywhere. Compared to a similar length short campaign like D20’s stuff, or the Hexbuds or even Trinyvale in NADDPOD, there was a lack of focus that I think a short campaign really needs. Short campaigns can be great when they tell a tight, short story, but ExU just kind of bounced around a lot and then was over.

And I hope this doesn’t seem like a dig at just Aabria because I think Matt could stand to maybe railroad just a tad now and then to give things a little more direction (campaign 2 started to drag at the end for me because it just felt like a bunch of stuff happening without a larger narrative to pull it together), but I do think the lack of direction and focus feels more jarring in a short campaign.

And I want to be super clear that I’m not saying Aabria is a bad dm or worse than Matt or whatever. There were a lot of things I loved about her style, and the pageant was one of the most entertaining things I’ve seen in an actual play show! I loved her Gilmore and Lolth! But I also think there is room for improvement in this series, whether Aabria dm’s the next season or they have a different dm. They’re trying something new with ExU, and I think that’s great! But I’d also like to see some changes to make this format work better!

“Of course.” Just Caleb had seemed like an attentive father, and Tadhg had been just as polite today as he’d been the other day, if a little less shy.

Jackie smiled and set the orange juice on the counter before starting his hunt for a glass. “Mr. Hackett will be there, too. Tadhg says they’re staying at his house.”

That made sense. Not in a larger picture sense, but Hackett had come into the diner today with the rambunctious crowd, and while Sam was always happy to see the sometimes broody older man out and about, it had surprised her to see him with so many people all at once.

Even at the Christmas pageant, sitting way up front, Hackett always had an air of someone who was a bit apart from those around him.

Taking her own turn at staring into the chilled depths of their ‘fridge, Sam asked, “Why is Tadhg staying with Mr. Hackett?”

“He says his dad knows Dr. Chakwas.”

But Jackie was friends with Hackett, so it would always be “Hackett’s house” in this family. “Got it.”

the aldritch kids - the rest of the kids!! she’s the second youngest, so the youngest and the eldest are still needed. liv’s got a better idea of how the family works, so please get in touch with her, but make themmmmm!

the impacted - i wasn’t sure what else to call them, but the kids who have been impacted by all the craziness this town provides, mainly the “abductions” from all those decades ago. i’d love for her to have a couple of close friends who know what she’s going through (though i prefer her best friend to not be one of them).

pageant living - she was a pageant participant once upon a time, but when her voice cracked in the middle of her performance, she lost the crown. it’s okay though, she saw it as a learning opportunity and realizing what she needed to work on. it also motivated her even more to leave miriam’s well and actually pursue a higher education somewhere else.

record store??? - i’m not sure if there’s one that actually exists, but a record store + employees where she’s working for the summer while she records her own demo and other things. u feel me?

the oakleys - her husband’s family! is parents are still alive and he has a brother and a sister. he himself was a middle child, but also pretty beloved of the family--dare i say, the favorite. his untimely demise really shook the family up and his little sister blames noah for what happened. they don’t get along at all and at times she does take her blame game too far and makes noah feel lower than low. his sister wasn’t happy that noah took over the diner and has, on many an occasion, attempted to sabotage things (especially the dine-in theater). but what she doesn’t understand is that noah is already so hard on herself that his sister’s words just roll off of her. that said, i’d love the whole family around.

the digital friendship - okay so this i’d like to see become romantic. basically, she participates in online group therapy that’s kept anonymous. there are people from miriam’s well and other places involved–mostly people who suffer from survivor’s guilt. it’d be interesting if this is someone she interacts with one a daily if the person she is talking to is her brother-in-law and he has more than just his brother’s death that’s torturing him--possibly a secret no one in the family knows about. basically it would take them time to uncover each other’s identities, and was can plan out a timeline for them as well! this way we can figure out their backgrounds and gauge their chemistry together!

I’m not gonna defend fic itself because lots of people have already done it better than I can. I’m just here to gush about why Pokemon is the garbage I crave and what I think it does differently from other fandoms.

1. It’s a sandbox.

Although you definitely can write Pokemon as a way to more deeply explore canon characters and ships, lots of us are drawn more to the world itself.
